The Portwest MX303 Hi-Vis X Back Class N Shirt is the long-sleeve, 100% cotton drill work shirt built for night work and low-light sites. Its HiVisTex reflective tape in a cross-back (X-back) configuration wraps the shoulders and back so you stay visible from every angle when vehicle headlights or site lighting hit you — exactly where it matters after dark.

Made from a preshrunk 100% cotton drill (190g), the MX303 breathes like a normal work shirt while meeting the Australian Class N (night) high-visibility standard. Underarm cool-flow mesh and a ventilated back bodice split keep air moving on hot, humid shifts, and the long sleeve gives you extra cover from the sun, sparks and abrasion. It's the shirt rail crews, traffic controllers, night-shift civil teams and road workers reach for.

Every shirt is finished with double breasted pockets (both with a pen division and plastic button closure) and gusset sleeves for unrestricted arm movement — the practical details that make a work shirt comfortable enough to wear all day and all night.

Why the MX303 is the smart choice for night work

  • Class N night visibility — retroreflective HiVisTex tape certified to AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 Class N and the current AS 4602.1:2024 Class N Level 2, so you're seen in the dark, not just in daylight.
  • X-back (cross-back) tape configuration — reflective tape runs over both shoulders and across the back, giving 360° visibility from the sides, front and rear — ideal for rail, road and plant-heavy sites.
  • 100% cotton drill, 190g — breathable, soft and preshrunk, so it holds its fit wash after wash.
  • Cool-flow ventilation — underarm mesh and a back bodice split with cool-flow mesh move heat out and air in.
  • UPF 50+ sun protection — the fabric is rated AS 4399 UPF 50+ (blocks ~98% of UV rays) for long-sleeve coverage on day shifts too.
  • Built to work — double breasted pockets with pen division, plastic button closure and gusset sleeves for real-world durability and movement.

Standards & certification

  • AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 Class N — High-visibility safety garments for night use.
  • AS 4602.1:2024 Class N Level 2 — certified to the current Australian high-visibility standard for night-use garments.
  • AS/NZS 1906.4 — Retroreflective materials and high-visibility fabrics for road and rail use.
  • AS 4399 UPF 50+ — Sun protective clothing, the highest UPF rating.

Class N vs Class D: Class N garments use retroreflective tape to make you visible at night when lit by vehicle headlights or site lighting. Class D (day) garments rely on fluorescent fabric for daytime visibility. If you need to be seen both day and night, look for a Class D/N (day/night) garment — contact us and we'll point you to the right option.

Who is the MX303 built for?

The MX303 is a night-visibility work shirt for anyone working in or near moving plant, vehicles or traffic after dark:

  • Rail & track workers — the X-back tape and long sleeve suit rail corridor and possession work.
  • Traffic control & road crews — high night-time visibility for roadworks, closures and line marking.
  • Civil & construction night shifts — seen around excavators, trucks and cranes in low light.
  • Mining & quarrying — heavy plant environments where 360° visibility is essential.
  • Warehousing & logistics (night) — forklift and yard work after dark.
  • Utilities, councils & maintenance — night call-outs and roadside works.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a day or night hi-vis shirt?

It's a Class N (night) garment. The retroreflective HiVisTex tape makes you visible at night when illuminated by headlights or site lighting. It's certified to AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 Class N and AS 4602.1:2024 Class N Level 2.

What does "X back" or "cross back" mean?

It refers to the reflective tape configuration. On the MX303 the tape runs over both shoulders and crosses the back in an X shape, giving all-round visibility from the front, sides and rear — important when plant and vehicles can approach from any direction.

What is the shirt made of?

100% cotton drill, 190g. It's preshrunk and breathable, with underarm cool-flow mesh and a ventilated back bodice split to keep you cool.

What sizes are available?

XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL in White.

Does it protect against the sun?

Yes. The fabric is rated AS 4399 UPF 50+, which blocks around 98% of UV rays — useful for day shifts and long-sleeve coverage.

Is it compliant for rail and road work?

The MX303 meets the Australian night-visibility standard (Class N) and AS/NZS 1906.4 for retroreflective materials. Always check your site or network's specific PPE requirements — some rail networks specify particular tape configurations or day/night (Class D/N) garments.

Can I order mixed sizes for my team?

Yes. We supply trade and volume orders with mixed sizes and can set up trade pricing and standing orders. Contact us with your size breakdown.

How do I care for the reflective tape?

Machine wash at 40°C, do not bleach, line dry and iron at a maximum of 150°C. Avoid fabric softener and high-heat drying, which can reduce the life of the retroreflective tape.
